7. Ministry for the Environment Public Workshop -Napier

Wednesday 7th May 10:30 – 1:30pm War Memorial Conference Centre
The proposed National Environmental Standard on Ecological Flows and Water Levels
apier -Wednesday 7th May.

The Ministry for the Environment has called for submission on a proposed National
Environmental Standard. The proposed standard promotes consistency in the way decisions are made to ensure there is sufficient variability and quantity of water flowing in rivers, ground
water systems, lakes, and wetlands.

The proposed standard sets interim limits on the alterations to flow and/or
water levels for rivers, wetland, and ground water systems that do not have
limits in place through regional plans. It also provides a process for
selecting the appropriate technical methods for evaluating ecological flows
and water levels in rivers, lakes, wetland, and groundwater systems.

The Ministry is holding workshops on the proposed standard starting on 30
April 2008 in eight locations around New Zealand. Please see the table
below for times, dates, and locations. For more information about the
proposed standard please visit

http://www.mfe.govt.nz/laws/standards/ecological-flows-water-levels/index.html.

Please rsvp to waterprogramme@mfe.govt.nz with your intentions to attend a
specific workshop.

Alternatively you can ring or email Whitney Bouma on 04

9 .WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY - Week 2nd to 6th June -
Watch this Space !!! we will start publishing any activities that are planned to mark the
celebration of World Environment Day - Hosted by New Zealand in 2008
Theme "Kick the Carbon Habit"
1st Activity advertised - Arbour Day Planting - Te Karamu Stream-Hawke's Bay Regional Council

World Environment Day is observed in more than 100 countries, and coincides
with Arbour Day. WED is an opportunity to raise awareness and promote action
on environmental issues through public engagement.

New Zealand is the host of WED 2008 in partnership with the UNited Nations
Environmental Programme(UNEP). The Ministry for the Environment is the lead
agency coordinating the event for the New Zealand Government, alongside
UNEP. A wide variety of community and regional events are planned.
The Theme for WED 2008 is Climate Change with a focus on moving towards a
low-carbon economy and lifestyle. "Kick the Habit"
(Carbon) is the international slogan for the event. The theme will also
include the role of forest conservation in acheiving domestic and global
climate change goals.

Hawke's Bay Regional Council is planning a series of tree plantingdays
during the week of June 3rd to 7th to promote the Karamu Project and WED.
5,000 trees have been ordered and a number of schools and organisations have
expressed interest in participating.

HBRC extends an invitation to schools, community groups and the general
public to join us at a planting session.

This is a fantastic opportunity to take positive action to adapt to climate change and
promote the conciousness of World action on World Environment Day
as well as help to enhance a valuable community asset.

HBRC encourage carpooling or other forms of sustainable transport to fit in
with the low carbon theme of WED.

Registrations are essential - E mail karaku@hbrc.govt.nz or phome 833 8085 -
