Genesis Reforestation Project This Charitable trust started in 1990 in response to the devastation caused by Cyclone Bola, with a strong focus on sustainable land use, restoration planting and education. The current projects of Genesis Reforestation Project are; The Shade House in Schools Project - Part funded by the Ministry for the Environment (Sustainable Management Fund) and the Hawke's Bay Regional Council. The aim of this project is to work directly with children teaching them about their environment and empowering them to participate in the care and restoration of important local restoration projects. . The focus is on growing and planting native tree and plants. Workshops are offered in Eco sourcing, seed ball making, sowing seeds, pricking out, potting up and planting out and ongoing maintenance and care. Genesis Reforestation employs a Coordinator for this project and we are working with 5 schools in the Central Hawke's Bay area, 8 schools in the Pekapeka Wetland Project and 4 schools growing for the Te Karamu Stream Project. Trees in Schools, Early Childhood, Marae and Communities Fund - This is a small fund for any early childhood centre, school, marae, or community group that is interested in creating a small slice of paradise on their property. This can be a native plant area or even a small edible forest. This fund covers a contribution to the coordinator for assistance in design, selection and planting of plants, plus up to $250 worth of trees or plants. The fund is a first in, first served basis and applications for 2010 are now being accepted. We aim to fund up to 8 projects in this financial year.
