Wednesday July 28 2010 - HB Farm Forester - Quayside Hotel, 7pm
HB Farm Forester is holding a special meeting at short notice to hear Marlborough forester Paul Millen talk about his dryland eucalpyt work. Free! There is no charge, if you would like to attend, please RSVP to email Marie Taylor planthawkesbay©xtra.co.nz or further info phone 06 836 7018
Paul Millen has Sustainable Farming Fund money to work on a project called "Establishing forests of genetically improved durable eucalpyts in NZ drylands."
He is part of the NZ Dryland Forests Initiative (NZDFI) out of the Marlborough Research Centre Trust.
The NZDRI strategy is to breed and develop forest management systems to grow eucalypts prdoucing high value naturally durable hardwoods for five dryland regions in NZ.
With CCA treated wood now banned for many uses by countries in Europe and by the USA there are significant international and domestic markets for naturally durable timbers.
They have selected species which are highly durable, drought tolerant, coppice vigorously, do not spread as wildings, sequester carbon twice as fast as pine on drylands and provide nectar and pollen for native biodiversity.
He plans to establish demonstration trials in each region: Marlborough, Canterbury, Gisborne, Hawke's Ba and Wairarapa to create breeding populations of the durable eucalypts.
And by December next year he's going to publish info about each species on-line, and then run regional workshops and field visits to the trials from Jan 2012 to May 2013.
As an aside, as part of his talk he is going to tell us about an innovative project in Marlborough to collect totara seed.
