Tree Planting

In sleep of helpless infancy
Tree's were the arms that cradled me;
On Tree my daily food is spread,Tree is my chair and Tree my bed.

-Teresa Hooley

We have already lost so much of our botanical heritage in Hawke's Bay. We need to restore the forests, and thereby increase biodiversity, prevent soil erosion and protect waterways.

Try to plant eco-sourced native trees.   Think about diversity of use e.g. windbreak, shade, stock fodder, timber, firewood or food.

Planting trees is one of the most rewarding things we can do for now and the future, and this is the time of year to start.

Take action!

  • Make a plan of what trees to plant this year.
  • Choose the right tree for the right place - consider microclimate required, eventual size etc.
  • Visit the Trees for Hawke's Bay Nursery at 40 Beach Rd, Haumoana.
  • Take a course in 'Native Trees for Hawke's Bay'.
  • Invite friends around for a tree planting working bee.
  • Organize a tree planting day for your school or community group.
  • Register with the Billion Tree Campaign.
  • Join a landcare group.
  • Calculate your carbon footprint and plant trees to offset it. (But aim to reduce your carbon footprint too.)
  • Don't waste trees - reduce, reuse and recycle all paper products. Buy recycled products.
